This introductory course provides a clear and structured introduction to the Fiqh of Fasting. Students will study what fasting is, its core requirements, and why fasting the month of Ramadan is obligatory, as well as the different types of fasting and the wisdom behind this act of worship.

This course is taught by a qualified shaykh and follows an authentic and traditional Islamic scholarly approach, grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Fasting is one of the central acts of worship in Islam and a foundational pillar of religious practice.

In this course, you’ll study the Fiqh of Fasting through an authentic, traditional scholarly approach grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah, using the text Easy Jurisprudence in Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah as the core course book.

You’ll learn how Islamic law defines fasting, the principles that govern it, and how these

rulings are applied in practice.

You’ll cover topics including:

  • the definition of fasting in Islamic law and its core requirements
  • the pillars of fasting and the importance of intention
  • the ruling and evidences for fasting Ramadan
  • the different types of fasting, including obligatory and voluntary fasting
  • the invalidators of fasting
  • recommended and disliked acts related to fasting
  • the rulings of iʿtikāf
  • the objectives and wisdom of fasting as an act of worship
Course Instructor
Shaykh 'Abd al-Haqq ibn Mullā Haqqī ibn ʿAli At-Turkmānī Al-ʿIraqī

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Turkmānī is a traditionally trained Islamic scholar with decades of study and teaching in the Islamic sciences. He studied fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, and ḥadīth under senior scholars in Iraq and beyond, and continued his education through close scholarly mentorship, manuscript study, and academic research.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies and has received ijāzāt in ḥadīth from a number of renowned muḥaddithūn. He has worked extensively in manuscript verification, ḥadīth takhrīj, and Islamic research, and is the recipient of an international award for scholarship in Sunnah and contemporary Islamic studies.

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq has taught and delivered lectures internationally, founded an Islamic research centre in the UK, and has authored and edited numerous works in fiqh, ḥadīth, ʿaqīdah, and contemporary Islamic thought. His teaching reflects an authentic, traditional scholarly approach, rooted in the classical Islamic tradition. 

Shaykh is also a founder of the Islamic University of the United Kingdom.
